SWIFT CURRENT TO HOST PRESTIGIOUS MIDGET AAA HOCKEY TOURNAMENT APRIL 2009
March 26, 2008 (Swift Current, SK) – Swift Current will host the Western Regional Midget AAA Telus Cup Qualifier tournament in April 2009, announced Home Hardware Legionnaire General Manager Jim Dekowny at a press conference earlier today.
The Western Regional Midget AAA Qualifier is the precursor to the prestigious Telus Cup Nationals held each spring.
This will be the first time the tournament has been held in Swift Current, SK in the celebrated 75-year history of the Legionnaires. The city was chosen from a field of seven other applications to host this major event.
“After setting forth the host criteria, it was decided to award the 2009 Regional Qualifier to the Swift Current Legionnaires,” announced SMAAAHL President Lloyd Friesen. “Their detailed submission carried support from many different agencies throughout the community. We are looking forward to a very successful event in Swift Current.”
The bid committee, a co-operative effort between the Swift Current Broncos and the Home Hardware Legionnaires, was comprised of Larry Johnson (Legionnaires President), Kent Woods (Legionnaires Head Coach), Jim Dekowny (Legionnaires General Manager), Marc Habscheid (Legionnaires Alumni) and Dean Chynoweth (Swift Current Broncos Head Coach/General Manager).
“Swift Current, and the Province of Saskatchewan, have a reputation for excellence in hosting large-scale events of this nature,” comments Legionnaires General Manager Jim Dekowny. “We are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to showcase our facilities and hospitality, and are confident this event will be the first of many held in the new iPlex.”
Participating teams include the host team Swift Current Legionnaires and the AAA league champions from Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northern Ontario.
The Saskatchewan Hockey Association is pleased to hear that the SMAAAHL has chosen the Swift Current Legionnaires to serve as the host of the 2009 Telus Cup Regional Championship. The City of Swift Current and Swift Current Minor Hockey have a terrific history of hosting Regional events such as Western Female Midget AAA Championship in 2007 and a World Under 17 Regional Event in 1997. The Telus Cup Regional has proved to be a tremendous event each time it is hosted in Saskatchewan due to the exhaustive work of volunteers in the host community. The Saskatchewan love of hockey truly comes through as the event is extremely well attended and the financial legacy the event leaves behind in the community ensures minor hockey programs continue to prosper for years to come. The SHA looks forward to working with the host committee in Swift Current and we are confident that they will put on the best event they possibly can.
